Nothing says “unplugged” like taking a sea plane to a tropical out island. Bimini is the closest Bahamian island to Florida, just 50 miles of its eastern shore, and because of this proximity, you can hop over to this beautiful island and land on the bright blue water. We chose Tropic Ocean Air.
When it comes to staying on Bimini, if you like luxury, then the Hilton is the hotel of choice. It’s 5 floors of rooms overlook either the tropical cottages of Resort World or the brilliant blue bay. The Bachelor recently filmed an episode here and while we were there the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders were shooting a swimsuit calendar. There are infinity pools, lazy rivers, 3 restaurants which were the best we tried on the island and a casino.
Diving is our tropical activity of choice. We went out with Bimini Undersea to catch the tail end of the Great Hammerhead season, but ended up snorkeling with a pod of wild dolphins and diving with reef sharks.
We also found two of the most amazing beaches – Paradise Beach on the north island and Shell Beach on the South Island. The color of the water was not to be believed!
We found Bimini to be an excellent weekend getaway for Floridians. Flight schedules are optimized to a Thursday-Sunday schedule. You can stay longer but you might want to rent one of the villas from Resort World.
