One of my new favorite resorts is set by itself in a dramatic red rock canyon so remote that cell phone service is often non-existent. It is a proud member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World group, the aptly named Enchantment Resort in Sedona, Arizona.

I discovered it accidentally while researching a post graduation trip to the southwest. I had already booked a different hotel in town through an online booking engine which didn’t list Enchantment as an option. Upon doing more research I happened upon the photo laden website showcasing the red rock view from the restaurant, I was instantly intrigued.

Natural beauty and adventurous activities were the draw. Popular activities are spa wellness sessions, hiking and mountain biking. Tennis and meditation at the nearby energy vortexes are also options as are external adventures in the area.

Sedona is a desert oasis just two hours north of Phoenix. While it shares some of the southwestern charms of its more urban sister city Sante Fe, New Mexico, it’s dramatic red rocks set it apart. Built in Boynton Canyon, it is not easily discovered and the entire resort has a luxurious private feel to it. After clearing the guarded gate and checking in, each guest is then driven to their own casita, or small house, via golf cart.  Casitas are well-equipped with scenic balconies overlooking the canyon walls.

A walk to the main building reveals the property restaurants. There is more formal dining inside at Che-Ah-Chi or al fresco drinks and apps by the fire at Tii Gavo. There is also a healthy cafe at the spa called Mii-Amo.  The town is a short drive away with informal dining options, art boutiques and the eclectic Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village. Also popular are jeep tours and the nearby Cathedral Rock.
